WERRY, Wm. J. Bruce

Peacefully in his 93rd year, Bruce Werry of Huntsville on 23 February 2022, “building his stairway to paradise…”

Dearly missed by his three daughters, Lisa of Haliburton, Pam of Barrie and Celia (Perry) of Forest.  Always adored by his grandchildren, Jessica (Kris), Christopher, Stephanie (Daniel), Patrick, Lauren (Eric), Meghan (Matt) and Nathan, Devin (Andrew) and Taylor.  A special twinkle in the eyes of his great-grandchildren, Ellie, Isla, Frankie, Violet, Harriet, Blake and Hazel.  Predeceased by his travel companion and better-half of 67 years, Lenore Werry, his parents, Ethel (Brien) and Stanley Werry of Toronto, and his son-in-law, Steve Copeland of Barrie.

Bruce Werry (University of Toronto, Victoria College 1950) will be remembered for his inquisitive spirit, relentless pursuit of new horizons and storytelling prowess.  Equal parts stubborn and sweet, when he wasn’t teaching band or mathematics at Huntsville High School, he could be found paddling on Fairy Lake, or, in time, getting walloped by his wife on the golf course near their home-away-from-home in Montserrat, West Indies.  In the early 1960s, Bruce packed up his family and headed to Ghana, West Africa where he assumed his post at the Teacher’s College in Kumasi.  In no time, he had made his way into the local drumming band.  Fast forward to jaunts across Europe, the Middle East and China, Bruce was also well-versed in Canadian landscapes having captained an RV bound for the Yukon, with Lenore by his side.  His observations, both mundane and marvellous, will live on in his many travel journals, photographs and collection of curiosities.

While his suitcase was always ready to be packed with his colourful collection of polyester pants, Bruce found equal enjoyment in his time at home on Lake Drive.   From Rotary plays and barbershop quartet performances to Trinity Choir rehearsals and well-planned rounds to find all the bargains to be had at Huntsville’s neighborhood grocery stores, Bruce was a familiar face in the community and will be missed.

Friends will be invited to celebrate the life of one of Glenn Miller and George Gershwin’s biggest fans at a future date this spring.  Memorial donations may be made to Huntsville Hospital Foundation or Trinity United Church, Huntsville.

GORTMAKER, Eleanor (nee Alexander)

After a fulsome 93 years, Eleanor Gortmaker passed away peacefully at Huntsville Hospital, early on Sunday, February 20, 2022.   Mom to Gail, Kent and Paul, and sister to Bryan and Lenora (predeceased by Gordon).

Eleanor met life with a sense of adventure, a ready smile and always a kind word. From her early beginnings near Shawville (Pontiac County), Quebec, Eleanor Alexander pursued a teaching career at schools in Quebec and Ontario before transitioning into being at home with her family after her June 1956 marriage to Al Gortmaker (deceased 2006).

Caring for her family was paramount for Eleanor, whether it was reading, sewing, baking or cooking, and she encouraged all three children to pursue their educational careers. Eleanor was also fortunate to enjoy trips to Toronto and Stratford theatre productions with the Centennial Seniors, and enjoy weekly lunch outings with the Muskoka Seniors, making many friends along the way.

Eleanor was fortunate to be able to spend the past few years safe at home, surrounded by family and engaging with friends. She will be missed by her children — Gail (Ken, deceased 2009), Kent (Cathie), and Paul; her siblings, Bryan (Gracey), and Lenora, as well as Gordon’s wife Nancy and their respective families; and her special friends Roz, Sandy and Mardi.

MEREDITH, Mary Margaret

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Margaret Meredith (Sanderson) announce her passing in her 93rd year on February 20th, 2022 at Hospice Huntsville.  Mary had been struggling the past few months with congestive heart failure, and her death ended that suffering.

Mary is survived by her sister, Betty (Don) Walker.  Predeceased by her husband, David Meredith in 1994.  Mary leaves behind her daughter, Lynda Melnyk, and sons, Lloyd (Jan) and Jim (Colleen) Meredith.  Predeceased by son-in-law Bernie Melnyk.  Mary was blessed with 10 grandchildren, all of whom will miss her greatly: Chris (Amanda), Mark (Amanda), Katryna (John), Jay (Steve), Bobbi (Todd), Brooke (Matt),  Tori, Georgie (Graeme), Teagan (Madi), and Kyra, in addition to 6 great-grandchildren: Mykola, MaryAnn, Arwyn, Mackenzie, Griffin, and Maeve. Predeceased by great grandson, Gavin.  Mary also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins, who will remember Auntie Mary’s love, sense of humour and laughter.

Mary was born in Toronto on December 16, 1929 to Percy & Babe Sanderson.  She married Dave in July of 1952 in Toronto, and raised their 3 children in Rexdale.  Mary founded the Rexdale lacrosse Women’s Auxiliary and often talked of her neighbours on the street and their morning coffee dates.

In 1968, Mary and Dave bought Walker’s Lake Lodge and moved their family to Huntsville.

Mary was an extremely hard worker.  After her retirement, she had more time for her many hobbies and participation in organizations close to her heart.  It was often difficult to keep track of what Mary was doing on any given day, as she seemed more busy during retirement than in her working years.  She was a member of the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary, where she styled the hair of patients.  Mary received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2011 in honour of her dedication to the Auxiliary, and was granted a Lifetime Membership in the Hospital Auxiliary Association of Ontario in 2010.  Mary was also an active member of the Pioneer Memorial United Church in Hillside, where she was a member of the community and UCC.

Mary also tore up the lanes in her Seniors’ Bowling League and was an accomplished card player.  She loved her Euchre games with her friends Marilyn, Bea,  and Kay. Over the years, Mary enjoyed her long-lasting friendship with Orma as well.  Even during her last weeks, she was out-scoring some of her grandchildren in Scrabble and jokingly asked one for “some better competition”.  She was an accomplished story teller with an impeccable memory, who loved to recall the antics of her sister, Betty, or recall fond memories of her nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.  Mary was the keeper of the history of her family.

Mary also loved to craft, and was gifted in her ability to create knitted and crocheted heirlooms for her family and friends.  Mary made many keepsake pieces for her family to mark important life events that will be forever cherished.  Soon after the birth of her first grandchild, Mary began the family tradition of crafting a handmade Christmas ornament each year for each of her grandchildren.  This continued for the next 43 years.  Once Mary reached her ninetieth year, she attempted to discontinue the tradition, stating that she was “too old” to carry on, however new ornaments continued to be given for the next two years.

Mary passed from this life surrounded by the love of her family, with her children and grandchildren at her side.  We would like to express our gratitude for the care provided by her son, Jim and daughter-in-law, Colleen during Mary’s later years. We would like to thank her

neighbours, especially Linda & Pat Russell. Lynda, Lloyd and Jim would also like to give a special thank you to Georgie for opening her home and taking such loving and compassionate care of Mary over the last 2 months until her passing.  They are also greatly appreciative of the support Georgie received from Bobbi, Kyra and Jay in assisting with Mom’s care.  Appreciation is also extended to Lynda West for providing Mary with such warmth and compassion in her later years and while in hospital.  Many thanks also to the LHIN HCC palliative care team, including Norma, Sarah, Paula and Dr. Mathies and Harrold. We would like to thank the team at Hospice Huntsville for making the last few moments of her life peaceful and graceful, we appreciate the care and compassion you showed her during her final moments.

Visitation will be held on Thursday February 24, 2022 between 2-4pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 High Street, Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary or the Pioneer Memorial United Church.

Masks must be worn to enter the funeral home. A receiving line will be formed to speak with the family without physical contact and long delays.

In retirement she and her husband Orville joined the Salvation Army Church where they spent several years volunteer coordinating and operating the thrift store and food program. She was a sponsor for Teen Challenge Canada for over 20 years and believed strongly in supporting troubled youth. She grew up through the Depression, and was determined that her family would never go without; she consistently helped family members when they fell on hard times. Evalyn was very social and loved playing cards, Yahtzee or any game where she could connect with friends. She was known for her crochet skills, making socks and an afghan blanket for every family member, as well as for fundraisers and events. She gave her grandchildren many memories of “Gramma Camp”, sleepovers and beach time.

Marie to parents Walter and Anna (nee Prudhomne) Williamson and raised alongside her 8 siblings.

Alice is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years William “Bill” Allen whom she married on July 5, 1969 in Bolsover, Ontario.  She is the loving mother of Tom Allen (Deb Witmer-Allen) and Tamara Smith (Brad). Alice earned her B.A. in English Literature at Queens University in Kingston, B. Ed. at Nipissing University in North Bay and Library Science Specialist at the University of Toronto. When thinking of Alice, family and friends will remember her love of cats, her feistiness, her competitive nature when curling or playing word games, the many hours and days she would spend quilting and perfecting the quilts she made or her strong sense of women’s rights.  Some would say it was the joy Alice felt and emanated when she would bring life to the characters she read to children and seeing the delight on their faces.  She enjoyed quiet times at the family cottage on Georgian Bay and snowshoeing, rustling through the leaves or making maple syrup at Goodwill Heights, the family woodlot in Armour Township.  In addition to traveling from coast to coast in Canada and to multiple American states, Alice and Bill traveled to international destinations such as Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Tobago, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Germany and Greece.  Alice thoroughly enjoyed and excelled at gardening.

Wallenius, Orvo (Orv) Walio

Sadly, Orvo passed away at Muskoka Shores Care Community in Gravenhurst after a long and difficult illness at 93 years old.  He is deeply missed by his wife Colleen, the love of his life for more than 68 years. He was the much loved Dad of Brock (Marlane), John (Patricia) and Bette. He will always be Grandpa to Daniel (Sandra) and Thomas (Candace), Uncle Orv to niece Connie (Vince) and great niece Emily (Mark).

Orv was born in Nipigon, Ontario and was predeceased by his parents Hemmi and Impi Ranta. As a boy, he worked in his father’s logging camp, saw mill and farm. He explored the forests surrounding Nipigon and was as comfortable there as in his won home. When his father, Hemmi, went hunting he would take Orv along and give him a rifle with a single bullet, which helped Orv become an exceptional marksman.

Over the years, Orv was employed as a forest ranger, firefighter, hotel security officer and retail loss prevention officer. Later in life he became a mechanic for air-cooled, marine and small engines, as usual with great skill. He also possessed a private pilot’s license and often flew out of Buttonville Airport.

Retiring to Huntsville in 1990, Orv fished, hunted, cross-country skied, snowshoed, canoed, camped and took up archery. He tied his own fishing flies and indulged his love of woodworking and pyrography.

It’s very difficult to refer to our Dad in the past tense, but he will always be remembered for his courage, which helped him face down many hardships, dangers, and bouts of serious illness. We’ll always cherish his big smile and bright blue eyes.

Donations in Orv’s memory to Muskoka Seniors, or, to Huntsville Public Library would be greatly appreciated by his family.

It was Orv’s wish that there not be a funeral. Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

Dad, we love you, we’re so proud of you, and we miss you.

She was a dog lover, enjoying the companionship of Holly, Belle, Bailey and Suki. She also looked forward to time spent on weekends and during the summer on Echo Lake in Baysville. She created fond memories with her friends, family, children and grandchildren on the beach. At approximately 4 years of age, Norman moved to Huntsville with his mother and younger sister Joan, when his father went overseas during the Second World War, where he was raised and spent most of his adult life. Norman was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Grace Margarite (nee Rickward), the love of his life, in August of 2019, whom he missed terribly. Norm (Dad) was a doer. If he saw something that needed to be done, he did it.  He was a lover of so many things including sports, travel, camping, fishing, photography and woodworking. And he loved his church family, his neighbours and the wider Huntsville community.  He has left his touch of love on the hearts of so many.

WAGG, James Kevin

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Kevin Wagg who, at the age of 61, passed peacefully early in the morning of January 28th, 2022 at Algonquin Grace, Hospice Huntsville.

James (or Jim or Jamie depending on how and when you knew him) was born and raised in Huntsville by his late parents, Percy Wagg and Theresa Rose. A licenced Optician of 42 years, James will be remembered by many as the smiling, friendly face at Precision Optical in the Huntsville Place Mall and later at the office of Stager, Stager and Lutyk Optometrists.

James loved the outdoors. Whether it was hunting in the backwoods of Ullswater, getting in a round of 9-holes at the local golf course, or pitching a tent in the middle of Algonquin Park, James was always the happiest outside, experiencing life and seeking new adventures with his friends and family.

The most important thing to James though, was his family. James was a devoted, loving husband of 41years to Jean Creasor, and proud father of Courtney and Tyler (Brittany). Although “too young” to be a grandfather, James’ greatest joy in the past few years has been that of being  ‘Grampy’ to Wyatt and Adelyn.

Predeceased by his brothers, Larry (Cheryl) and Peter, James is survived by his brothers, Ernie (Evelyn), Ray (Diane), Roger (Shannon), and Chris (Antoinette) and siblings-in-law, Brian (Carol), Darryl, and Charlene (Dave). James will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Huntsville would be appreciated for the peace and comfort they provided James and his family.  www.mitchellfuneralhome.ca

JENSEN, Marion Dorothy (nee Sluman)

Passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2022 at the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital at the age of 82.  Born on May 28th, 1939 in Dwight, Ontario to parents William and Dorothy (nee Robertson) Sluman. Marion married Paul Jensen in Dwight, Ontario on September 30th, 1961 and would spend the next 60 years together filled with much love, a lot of laughter and some tears. She is the cherished mother of Stephen and Suzanne (Shawn) Graham. Proud grandmother of Scott (Natasha) Graham, Cameron (Brittany) Graham and Hunter Graham. Great grandmother to Elijah and Hadley Graham. Marion will be dearly missed by her sisters Marnie (dec. Carmen), Isabel (dec. Joe) and Pat (Ron), sister-in-law Sally Suman and predeceased by her brother George Sluman, as well as sister-in-law Janet (Ken) Maw, sister-in-law Myrna (dec Ken) Jensen and predeceased by brother-in-law Tor.

Born and raised in Dwight, Ontario provided Marion with a strong sense of family and community, while ensuring her love and appreciation for the area and numerous friends in this small town. She loved spending her summer days, swimming and socializing on the Jensen (Sluman) corner of Dwight Beach, camping at Bon Echo Provincial Park and vacationing for many years in Cuba. Marion lived a full and remarkable life as a wonderful mother (both natural and adopted by many as such), homemaker, friend and co-worker before leaving the workforce to raise her children.  She cherished each moment with her extended family and myriad of friends from all around the world. If one trait were used to describe Marion, it would be that she absolutely loved to entertain, whether small, or large groups of people. She had a magical quality of making others feel welcome, loved and cared for, within moments of meeting. We would be remiss in not mentioning her love of shopping, especially the years of marathon, week-long “retail therapy” sessions at Christmas time with her sisters.

The family invite friends to a visitation on Thursday, February 3, 2022 from 1-2 p.m. at Billingsley Funeral Home, Huntsville. The funeral will follow in the chapel at 2 p.m. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

PLEASE NOTE: In keeping with the restrictions mandated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, limited attendance, contact tracing, social distancing and facial coverings will be strictly adhered to. To attend the visitation or funeral service, please call the funeral home at 705-789-8982 to reserve a time or through Marion’s memorial page located at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

SCHMIDTKE, Koen “Koko” Robert Wilfred

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic loss of Koen.  Koen (Koko) Schmidtke was a bright spirit and has left holes in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.  He passed away at home on January 22, 2022 at the tender age of 22.  He was the beloved son of Kevin and Tara (Marcus) and a cherished brother to Kelton and Taea and step-brother to Lara.  He will be greatly missed by his grandparents Phyllis Fraser (Barrie), Doug Fraser, and Helen and Norm Schmidtke.  Family gatherings will never be the same for his many aunts and uncles and cousins who loved him so deeply and are devastated by his loss.

Often heard before seen, Koko’s infectious laugh will never be forgotten.  He was an adorable scallywag who brought joy to whoever he was with and had a gift for making everyone feel special. He will always be remembered for his kind, generous spirit, and his exuberant nature. He made everyone laugh and could be relied upon to bring life to any occasion. He had all the time in the world for anyone who needed him. Koen was a true friend to all and his absence will be greatly felt.

Koen was happiest in the outdoors and was always up for an adventure.  Whether it was scuba diving or climbing a mountain, Koko was always keen to get amongst it. He loved hunting and fishing, and Killarney will always be a special place for him. He was a generous soul who loved all living things. He was gifted with plants and gained pride from his gardens. He was employed as a landscaper when he lived in Australia and was a natural when working with his hands. So witty and cheeky, Koen was a great co-worker to have.  No matter what job he was doing, he made every workplace a fun place to be.

His love of animals was immense.  Archie will miss Koen’s love and affection.

This world will never be the same without Koen’s brilliant spark. A Celebration of Life will take place when we can all gather together to honour such a beautiful person in the manner he most deserves.

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations can be made to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, The  Friends of Algonquin Park and Muskoka Mental Health Association in Lieu of flowers.   Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

BOTHAM, Alan George

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan George Botham at Muskoka Landing in Huntsville, Ontario on January 18, 2022.

Born in Newmarket on December 24, 1940. Predeceased by parents Oscar George Botham and Evelyn Florence Botham. Survived by Frances, his wife of 51 years, and sister Janice Belfry, half-brother Bob Botham and half-sister Margaret Botham Breen.

Al worked in a supervisory position at Kimberly-Clark in Huntsville for over 25 years. He was one of the first seven hired at start up of the Huntsville Mill. He led an interesting life doing the things he loved such as fishing, feeding birds and deer and being in the outdoors. He made maple syrup with a small operation called B’s Trees and enjoyed it for a number of years. When he retired from Kimberly-Clark he joined his wife in the antique business “B’s Antiques” opening a shop for himself called the Man Cave. This proved very successful and satisfying for him. He evolved into appraising coins, drawing in collectors from all across Ontario. He had an extensive knowledge in primitives, antique tools, early decoys, oil lamps and many other things that he loved to talk about and share his knowledge with others. He leaves a big hole in the lives of those around him.

Al has been cremated. There will be no service according to his wishes. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated or the planting of a tree in his memory. Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

Larry (Lawrence Alfred) Carle died at St. Michael’s Hospital Toronto on January 9, 2022.

Larry was born on February 17, 1944 in North Bay, ON to parents Lawrence and Yvonne (deceased). He was a loving father to Kenny and Danny and a beloved brother to Brian Carle, Gail Stoneman and Brenda Kuczenski (deceased).

He attended high school in North Bay and upon graduating trained as a millwright in Sault Ste. Marie before relocating to Port Hope, continuing to work in the near-by steel industry.

In the 1970s he discovered a passion for building log homes and following his training launched a contracting business. Having become established, he relocated his business to Huntsville/Lake of Bays, where he continued until his retirement.

Larry liked to say, “I specialize in the unusual” and while that comment referred to building projects, it applied to many facets of his life. He made friends across the spectrum of age and circumstance: one of his clients was a woman approaching 90 for whom he’d built her late-in-life dream home. She came to love him like a son. Another friend was a young man he met in Cambodia as a single guy and re-connected with him as a family man in Costa Rica and back in Canada. Other friends were 30 somethings who were building a resort in CR and wanted Larry’s advice and assistance. They valued him as a friend and mentor despite the big difference in age; Larry somewhat transcended aging. He said, “Hanging out with young people keeps me young!” That was true but he never neglected his family or old friends either. They could count on a call every few weeks no matter where he was in the world.

Larry adored his family – his two sons, his sisters and his brother and he talked about them often with love and pride. It’s a sad but common aspect of human nature that many people ‘talk trash’ about past relationships but Larry always spoke about his ex-wife (the mother of his sons) with respect and affection; his many relationships were the same; if Larry loved someone, they stayed loved forever.

After his formal working life was over, Larry answered the call of his adventuresome nature. A two week sailing adventure in the Bahamas in 1987 seemed to intensify his desire to travel. He loved sunshine and hot weather and having a deep, year-round tan! While others his age were spending the winter in Florida and Arizona, Larry spent a few years bonding with a Cambodian family who welcomed him back en masse each year with a family picnic at the airport. He described in vivid detail the challenges of riding a motor-scooter in the busy and congested city streets of Vietnam and Cambodia. Nothing scared him – he looked at attempted robberies and muggings as an exciting adventure. Larry had an unrivaled zest for life and an eternally positive attitude. His cup wasn’t only half full, it was overflowing – through good times and bad.

If you drive around Huntsville/Lake of Bays to seek out structures Larry built over the years you would be amazed at the sheer number of them and how good everything still looks. Like Larry, log is timeless. It’s comforting to know that ‘his’ structures will be around long after he’s gone – just as our memories will be.

At Larry’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. But he might suggest that in memory of him, you call or visit a loved one just to say, “I love you.”

Condolences may be shared at Northcutt Funeral home in Bowmanville, ON  https://northcuttelliott.com/

JARVIS, Glenn Ray

At Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice, Huntsville on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the age of 92.

Glenn was born February 7, 1929 in Toronto to the late Ray and Mabel Jarvis. Husband to Marilyn (Nemerovsky) for 50 years. Father to Tina Boysen (Andre), John (Sue), and Ray. Grandfather to Bryson, Jenna, Samantha, Claire, Amelia, Jaimie, Raquel, and Elyse. Brother to Mona and Audrey. Uncle to Len, Val, Dan, Rob, Cindy, and Wayne. The most valued and important aspect of his life were his family and relatives.

Glenn grew up in Toronto on Fairbank Avenue and would spend summers with his father’s family in Madoc, Ontario. Madoc was a special place for him, and he continued to visit throughout his lifetime. Glenn’s last visit to Madoc was with the McBeath family touring around on a pontoon boat in Jarvis lake.

In his 20s, Glenn was hired by Bell Canada and worked on the Mid-Canada Line. He lived at a radar station running along the 55th parallel in Northern Manitoba. After working for the Bell, Glenn became an entrepreneur (as a youngster, he already had a few entrepreneurial jobs – selling newspapers, bulbs, golf balls and delivering for a bakery using his bicycle) and created many businesses throughout his life. After marrying Marilyn in 1964, they worked 40-plus years together as self-employed business owners, meeting and enjoying many people along the way as well as mentoring others in business. Glenn and Marilyn collaborated and worked passionately with a variety of businesses in Toronto and Huntsville; pools and supplies, moped sales, campground and cottages, taxi, bookstore, motel, and real estate. As Glenn and Marilyn created new and interesting businesses they always included the children and were involved in many of the children’s activities. Throughout his years Glenn was known for always doing something new and enterprising and with many new stories to hear. He especially loved sharing stories about his businesses, life on the radar line and history (especially indigenous history and sharing his stories about working in Northern Manitoba and living in the bush with first nation Cree). Glenn’s nickname was Red and his Cree name was mihkostikwân.

Glenn was a music lover, especially jazz. He loved to play different instruments by ear such as piano, clarinet, saxophone and harmonica as a hobby. Together with Marilyn in retirement, Glenn had many adventures and new friends in Florida as a snowbird for many years.

After Marilyn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011, Glenn supported her as loving husband and caregiver until her passing in 2014.

Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service took place on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the McConnell Funeral Home, Madoc at 11:00 a.m.

Betty loved to curl and along with her husband, was a long time member of the Granite Curling Club in Dundas where she rose to the position of Skip and led her team to numerous victories.

Betty will be laid to rest in the spring at Madill Cemetery and at this time, family and friends will gather in the sun to celebrate Betty’s life. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzherimer Society of Muskoka or Madill Church Preservation Society.  Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

She will be remembered by all she met for her beautiful smile and graceful beauty.

Linda Mae McEachern
August 5, 1952 – December 14, 2021

Linda Mae McEachern passed away peacefully at home on December 14, 2021 at the age of 69.

Linda, who moved to Huntsville in 1978, was well known for her passion for community, volunteering, and advocacy.

She had a very caring and compassionate personality, a great sense of humour, and was wonderfully creative. She loved arts and crafts, and also wrote a poem published by Community Living Ontario. She cherished spending time with family and friends, or catching up with them by phone. She liked to travel, too, and was twice able to visit the Dominican Republic.

She valued her independence, and enjoyed working and volunteering in her community. She loved her job at Hunters Bay Radio and looked forward to it each week. And she was an avid volunteer for many community causes and organizations. She always gave her time to support Community Living Huntsville events and activities, including the children’s Christmas toy drive, fundraisers, and annual Remembering Friends memorial tributes, as just one example.

Linda was also a determined self-advocate and knew when to use her strong voice to speak up for herself and others. She was a member of People First, and served on the Community Living Huntsville board of directors for a number of terms, too. She made a difference not only in her life, but in the lives of those around her.

The depth of loss we feel in parting with this wonderful community member and friend is indescribable. Our hearts are with her friends and family in this difficult time.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Billingsley Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until time of the funeral service in the chapel at 11:00 a.m.  Linda will be laid to rest at Hutcheson Memorial Cemetery in the spring. For those unable to attend the funeral service, live-streaming will be available.

PLEASE NOTE: As per the directive of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, COVID-19 protocols are in place; masks and social distancing are mandatory. Registration for the visitation, service and live-stream is required, please RSVP at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com.

As per Linda’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the Huntsville Salvation Army Food Bank or CNIB are greatly appreciated. Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com

LESLIE, Eileen Anna (née McTurk) died on December 18th, 2021, in Toronto. Born at home on the family farm near Keppel, Saskatchewan on February 15th,1925 Eileen was the last surviving member of her great generation, on both sides of the family. She is survived by sons Marshall (Kate Murray) and Craig (Penny Cutler) and grandchildren Kade, Erin, Dave and Maura. Eileen was predeceased by her parents Agnes and Bill, sisters Molly and Sheila, and brother Jack. Her husband of almost 50 years – Rupert – died in 1999. Eileen was a child of the Depression and the Prairie Dust Bowl. Educated in a one room schoolhouse, she left that school at 16 to work in a Toronto factory, as did so many other young women who helped mobilize a nation at war. She met Rupe on a Huntsville-bound ski train in 1947, and they wed in 1949, in Toronto, where they lived until moving to Huntsville, in 1968. Townspeople might have crossed paths with Eileen in one of the retail settings where she worked, but more likely at church, for Eileen bore witness to and lived her faith. Eileen was a wonderful and dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, for whom family was everything. A visitation with the family will take place at 12:00PM on Tuesday, December 21st at Faith Baptist Church, 169 West Road, Huntsville immediately preceding a service there at 1:00PM. Interment will occur at the historic Madill Cemetery when spring arrives.

PLEASE NOTE: As per the directive of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, COVID-19 protocols are in place; masks and social distancing are mandatory. Registration for the visitation, service and livestream is required, please RSVP/register at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com.

Messages of condolence can be left at www.billingsleyfuneralhome.com. Our family wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, and a safe New Year.
